Indications: Moxigen ophthalmic solution is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of various microorganisms, including aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and Chlamydia trachomatis. It is also utilized as an intraocular antibiotic to prevent postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis.
Pharmacology: Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair.
Dosage & Administration:
Interaction: Moxigen ophthalmic solution is unlikely to affect drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP1A2 based on in vitro studies.
Contraindications: Avoid use in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolones, or to any components of the medication.
Side Effects: Common ocular side effects include conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, and ocular discomfort. Nonocular adverse events may include fever, increased cough, and rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Use during pregnancy should be considered only if benefits outweigh risks. Moxifloxacin excretion in human milk suggests caution during lactation.
